Zoledronic Acid

A bisphosphonate given by infusion to treat osteoporosis and Paget's disease of bone.

Clinical information

Common uses

treating and preventing osteoporosis after menopause
increasing bone mass in men with osteoporosis
treating and preventing steroid-induced osteoporosis
Paget's disease of bone

Common side effects

fever
muscle aches
headache
joint pain
flu-like illness

Cautions

not for people with low blood calcium or poor kidney function
take enough calcium and vitamin D during treatment
jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis) reported — have a dental check first
unusual thigh-bone fractures and severe bone or muscle pain reported

Interactions

aminoglycoside antibiotics — can lower calcium for long periods
loop diuretics (water tablets) — higher risk of low calcium
kidney-harming drugs — use with caution

Pregnancy: stop if pregnancy is recognised
