Zoledronic Acid

A bisphosphonate given by infusion to treat osteoporosis and Paget's disease of bone.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • treating and preventing osteoporosis after menopause
  • increasing bone mass in men with osteoporosis
  • treating and preventing steroid-induced osteoporosis
  • Paget's disease of bone

Common side effects

  • fever
  • muscle aches
  • headache
  • joint pain
  • flu-like illness

Cautions

  • not for people with low blood calcium or poor kidney function
  • take enough calcium and vitamin D during treatment
  • jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis) reported — have a dental check first
  • unusual thigh-bone fractures and severe bone or muscle pain reported

Interactions

  • aminoglycoside antibiotics — can lower calcium for long periods
  • loop diuretics (water tablets) — higher risk of low calcium
  • kidney-harming drugs — use with caution

Pregnancy: stop if pregnancy is recognised
