Injectable vitamin C for treating scurvy.

Clinical information

Common uses

short-term treatment of scurvy when oral dosing not possible
adults and children from 5 months

Common side effects

pain and swelling at the injection site
faintness, nausea, flushing or headache if infused too fast

Cautions

prolonged high doses can cause kidney oxalate damage and stones
severe haemolysis risk in G6PD deficiency — reduced dose
interferes with blood and urine glucose tests

Interactions

erythromycin, kanamycin, streptomycin, doxycycline (activity may fall)
bleomycin (inactivated)
amphetamine and pH-sensitive drugs (urine acidified)
warfarin (continue standard monitoring)

Pregnancy: stay within the recommended daily allowance
