Vincristine Sulfate

A chemotherapy injection used to treat acute leukaemia and other cancers.

Clinical information

Common uses

acute leukaemia
Hodgkin's disease and other lymphomas (in combination)
childhood cancers such as neuroblastoma and Wilms' tumour

Common side effects

hair loss
nerve pain
constipation
low white blood cells
tingling, numbness or difficulty walking

Cautions

intravenous use only — fatal if given into the spine
nerve damage is the most troublesome side effect
not for people with demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome
leakage at the drip site can injure tissue

Interactions

phenytoin — blood levels fall, more seizures
strong CYP3A inhibitors (e.g. itraconazole) — avoid
fluconazole — monitor closely
strong CYP3A inducers (e.g. St John's wort) — avoid
P-glycoprotein inhibitors or inducers — avoid

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm an unborn baby
