Vinblastine Sulfate

A chemotherapy injection used to treat lymphomas and several other cancers.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • Hodgkin's disease and other lymphomas
  • advanced testicular cancer
  • Kaposi's sarcoma
  • breast cancer unresponsive to hormone treatment

Common side effects

  • low white blood cells
  • hair loss
  • constipation
  • feeling or being sick
  • numbness or tingling in fingers and toes

Cautions

  • intravenous use only — fatal if given into the spine
  • leakage at the drip site can badly irritate tissue
  • white blood cells can fall to dangerous levels
  • not started during active bacterial infection

Interactions

  • phenytoin — blood levels fall, more seizures
  • CYP3A inhibitors, including erythromycin — worse side effects

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm an unborn baby
