Vigabartin

Anti-seizure medicine for resistant epilepsy and infantile spasms.

Clinical information

Common uses

refractory complex partial seizures, add-on from age 2
infantile spasms in babies 1 month to 2 years
not a first-line agent

Common side effects

blurred vision
sleepiness and tiredness
dizziness and poor coordination
tremor
weight gain (children)

Cautions

can cause permanent, irreversible vision loss — regular eye checks
brain MRI changes reported in infants
risk of suicidal thoughts
taper slowly to avoid withdrawal seizures

Interactions

phenytoin (levels fall — dose may need adjusting)

Pregnancy: may harm the baby — registry enrolment advised
