Verapamil

A calcium channel blocker for high blood pressure, angina and irregular heartbeats.

Clinical information

Common uses

high blood pressure
preventing angina chest pain
irregular heart rhythms
preventing cluster headaches (specialist use)

Common side effects

constipation
feeling or being sick
flushing
headaches
feeling dizzy or tired

Cautions

do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice
do not stop suddenly — blood pressure may rise
not suitable with some heart problems or very slow heartbeat
alcohol increases its effects

Interactions

antibiotics such as clarithromycin, erythromycin or rifampicin
statins such as simvastatin or atorvastatin
digoxin or ivabradine (heart medicines)
dabigatran (blood thinner)
St John's wort
grapefruit — raises verapamil levels

Pregnancy: can be taken, though not commonly used — doctor will review
