Vecuronium

A muscle-relaxant injection given during general anaesthesia and surgery.

Clinical information

Common uses

muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation
helping insertion of a breathing tube

Common side effects

muscle weakness lasting longer than needed
prolonged paralysis after long-term intensive care use

Cautions

hospital use only, with breathing support immediately available
severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening
small doses have profound effects in myasthenia gravis
medication errors can cause paralysis and death

Interactions

succinylcholine — enhances and prolongs its effect
other non-depolarising muscle relaxants — additive effect
