Vecuronium

A muscle-relaxant injection given during general anaesthesia and surgery.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation
  • helping insertion of a breathing tube

Common side effects

  • muscle weakness lasting longer than needed
  • prolonged paralysis after long-term intensive care use

Cautions

  • hospital use only, with breathing support immediately available
  • severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening
  • small doses have profound effects in myasthenia gravis
  • medication errors can cause paralysis and death

Interactions

  • succinylcholine — enhances and prolongs its effect
  • other non-depolarising muscle relaxants — additive effect
