Valsartan+ Hydrochlorothiazide

A combination tablet of a blood pressure medicine and a water tablet for high blood pressure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure

Common side effects

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • cold-like symptoms

Cautions

  • can injure or kill an unborn baby — stop if pregnant
  • can cause low blood pressure, especially if dehydrated
  • kidney function and potassium monitored in susceptible people
  • can trigger acute glaucoma or lupus flare

Interactions

  • lithium — toxicity risk; levels monitored
  • NSAID painkillers — kidney risk, weaker effect
  • potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics — high potassium
  • aliskiren — do not combine if diabetic
  • diabetes medicines — dose may need adjusting
  • cholestyramine or colestipol — less absorbed

Pregnancy: avoid — can seriously harm the baby; stop if pregnant
