Valganciclovir Hydrochloride

An antiviral tablet for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in people with weakened immunity.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • CMV eye infection (retinitis) in people with AIDS
  • preventing CMV disease after organ transplant

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • fever
  • tiredness
  • feeling sick
  • headache

Cautions

  • can cause severe drops in blood cells — counts monitored
  • may impair fertility in men and women
  • may cause birth defects and possibly cancer
  • kidney failure risk — kidney function monitored

Interactions

  • imipenem-cilastatin (antibiotic) — seizures reported; not recommended
  • ciclosporin or amphotericin B — kidney risk, monitor
  • mycophenolate mofetil — monitor for toxicity
  • zidovudine and other marrow-suppressing drugs — added toxicity
  • didanosine — its levels increase
  • probenecid — valganciclovir levels increase

Pregnancy: avoid — potential to cause birth defects
