Clinical information

Common uses

preventing and treating venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
atrial fibrillation with embolisation
clot prevention in surgery, transfusion and dialysis
disseminated intravascular coagulation

Common side effects

bleeding
low platelets
injection-site irritation
raised liver enzymes
allergic reactions

Cautions

fatal dosing errors — strength must be double-checked
heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) — platelets monitored
benzyl alcohol vials not for newborns
potassium can rise

Interactions

antiplatelet drugs and drugs affecting platelets (more bleeding)

Pregnancy: preservative-free form preferred — no evidence of fetal harm
