Common uses

tuberculosis (TB) skin testing in people at risk

Common side effects

firm raised swelling at the test site (the expected positive reaction)

Cautions

not after a previous severe reaction to a TB skin test
not needed with documented active or treated TB
not for people with extensive burns or eczema

Interactions

corticosteroids and immunosuppressants — may blunt the test result
live virus vaccines — delay the test by at least 1 month

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
