Common uses

dilating the pupil for eye examinations and short procedures

Common side effects

temporary blurred vision
reduced sharpness of vision
sensitivity to light
mild eye discomfort

Cautions

can raise blood pressure — caution with heart disease or overactive thyroid
caution in children under 5
may briefly raise pressure inside the eye

Interactions

atropine-like medicines — stronger blood pressure response
carbachol, pilocarpine and eye cholinesterase inhibitors — effects reduced
potent inhaled anaesthetics — heart effects may be increased
