Tropicamide + Phenylephrine

A combination eye spray used to dilate the pupil for eye examinations.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • dilating the pupil for eye examinations and short procedures

Common side effects

  • temporary blurred vision
  • reduced sharpness of vision
  • sensitivity to light
  • mild eye discomfort

Cautions

  • can raise blood pressure — caution with heart disease or overactive thyroid
  • caution in children under 5
  • may briefly raise pressure inside the eye

Interactions

  • atropine-like medicines — stronger blood pressure response
  • carbachol, pilocarpine and eye cholinesterase inhibitors — effects reduced
  • potent inhaled anaesthetics — heart effects may be increased
