Tropicamide

Clinical information

Common uses

  • dilating the pupil for eye examinations
  • temporarily relaxing eye focusing for diagnosis

Common side effects

  • brief stinging
  • blurred vision
  • sensitivity to light
  • dry mouth
  • headache

Cautions

  • may briefly raise pressure inside the eye
  • can cause behavioural disturbances, especially in children
  • remove contact lenses before use

Interactions

  • carbachol, pilocarpine and eye cholinesterase inhibitors — effects reduced

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
