Trifluoperazine

An antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia.

Clinical information

Common uses

schizophrenia
short-term treatment of severe non-psychotic anxiety

Common side effects

drowsiness
dizziness
dry mouth
skin rash
blurred vision

Cautions

can cause a persistent, possibly irreversible movement disorder (tardive dyskinesia)
not with severe sedation, blood disorders or liver damage
neuroleptic malignant syndrome has been reported
anxiety use limited to low dose and 12 weeks

Interactions

CNS depressants (opioids, antihistamines, barbiturates, alcohol) — effects intensified
atropine — effects intensified

Pregnancy: not recommended unless essential
