Torsemide

A loop diuretic (water tablet) for fluid build-up and high blood pressure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • fluid build-up from heart, kidney or liver disease
  • high blood pressure

Common side effects

  • peeing more than usual

Cautions

  • can cause low blood pressure and worsening kidney function
  • electrolytes and blood sugar checked periodically
  • can cause hearing problems (ototoxicity)

Interactions

  • NSAID painkillers — weaker effect, kidney risk
  • warfarin and phenytoin — levels may be affected
  • lithium — risk of lithium toxicity
  • cholestyramine — less torsemide absorbed
  • ACE inhibitors and ARBs — low blood pressure, kidney risk
  • corticosteroids — risk of low potassium
