  • dizziness

  • loss of appetite or weight loss

Cautions

  • use contraception — it can seriously harm a developing baby
  • may not suit people with kidney, liver or eye problems
  • do not stop suddenly — dose reduced gradually
  • best not to drink alcohol — more side effects, seizure risk

Interactions

  • hormonal contraceptives, such as the combined pill
  • other epilepsy medicines
  • alcohol

Pregnancy: avoid — linked to birth defects; doctor will usually switch medicines
