Tolterodine

An antimuscarinic medicine that relaxes the bladder to treat overactive bladder symptoms.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • urinary urgency, frequency and incontinence (overactive bladder)
  • bedwetting in children

Common side effects

  • dry mouth
  • blurred vision
  • constipation
  • feeling dizzy or sleepy
  • headaches

Cautions

  • do not drive if sleepy, dizzy or vision is blurred
  • may worsen confusion or dementia
  • not suitable with angle closure glaucoma or urinary retention
  • tell your doctor about heart problems, including long QT syndrome

Interactions

  • erythromycin, clarithromycin (antibiotics)
  • itraconazole, fluconazole (antifungals)
  • amiodarone, sotalol and other heart rhythm medicines
  • similar antimuscarinic medicines (e.g. fesoterodine)
  • tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, imipramine)
  • sedatives and alcohol (more drowsiness)
