Tobramycin

An inhaled aminoglycoside antibiotic for Pseudomonas lung infection in cystic fibrosis.

Clinical information

Common uses

cystic fibrosis with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (age 6+)

Common side effects

increased cough
sore throat
increased sputum
breathlessness
voice changes

Cautions

can cause ringing in the ears and hearing loss
can harm the kidneys
can worsen muscle weakness
airway tightening (bronchospasm) can occur after inhaling

Interactions

avoid other medicines that harm hearing, kidneys or nerves
not recommended with furosemide, ethacrynic acid, urea or IV mannitol

Pregnancy: caution — this drug class can harm the baby; inhaled absorption is minimal
