Tizanidine

A short-acting muscle relaxant used to manage muscle spasticity.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • muscle spasticity, timed for when relief matters most

Common side effects

  • dry mouth
  • drowsiness
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • constipation

Cautions

  • can lower blood pressure
  • can injure the liver — liver tests monitored
  • very sedating with alcohol or other sedatives
  • do not stop suddenly — rebound high blood pressure and fast heartbeat

Interactions

  • fluvoxamine (do not combine)
  • ciprofloxacin (do not combine)
  • other blood pressure-lowering medicines
  • alcohol and sedatives (additive drowsiness)
  • oral contraceptives, cimetidine, aciclovir (raise its levels)
