Tigecycline

An intravenous antibiotic reserved for complicated infections when alternatives are unsuitable.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • complicated skin infections
  • complicated abdominal infections
  • community-acquired bacterial pneumonia

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach pain
  • headache

Cautions

  • boxed warning: slightly higher death rate than comparator antibiotics
  • used only when other treatments are unsuitable
  • can permanently stain developing teeth (late pregnancy, childhood under 8)
  • pancreatitis and liver problems reported

Interactions

  • warfarin (blood thinner) — clotting tests monitored
  • tacrolimus and ciclosporin — levels monitored

Pregnancy: avoid later pregnancy — can affect the baby's teeth and bones
