Ticlopidine

An antiplatelet tablet to prevent stroke when aspirin cannot be used.

Clinical information

Common uses

preventing thrombotic stroke when aspirin fails or is not tolerated
with aspirin after coronary stent placement

Common side effects

diarrhoea
feeling sick
indigestion
rash
stomach pain

Cautions

boxed warning: can cause life-threatening blood disorders
blood tests every 2 weeks for the first 3 months
stop and call your doctor for fever, bruising or jaundice
not with active bleeding or severe liver problems

Interactions

may raise levels of some liver-metabolised medicines

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
