Ticagrelor

An antiplatelet tablet that lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing first heart attack or stroke in high-risk coronary disease
  • reducing stroke risk after minor stroke or high-risk TIA

Common side effects

  • bleeding
  • breathlessness

Cautions

  • boxed warning: can cause serious, sometimes fatal bleeding
  • not used after bleeding in the brain or with active bleeding
  • do not stop suddenly — raises risk of heart events
  • breathlessness on it usually settles by itself

Interactions

  • strong CYP3A inhibitors or inducers (avoid)
  • opioids (reduce its absorption)
  • simvastatin or lovastatin over 40 mg daily (more statin side effects)
  • rosuvastatin (levels may rise — monitor)
  • digoxin (levels monitored)

Pregnancy: limited data — no drug-linked harm identified in case reports
