Ticagrelor

An antiplatelet tablet that lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Clinical information

Common uses

preventing first heart attack or stroke in high-risk coronary disease
reducing stroke risk after minor stroke or high-risk TIA

Common side effects

bleeding
breathlessness

Cautions

boxed warning: can cause serious, sometimes fatal bleeding
not used after bleeding in the brain or with active bleeding
do not stop suddenly — raises risk of heart events
breathlessness on it usually settles by itself

Interactions

strong CYP3A inhibitors or inducers (avoid)
opioids (reduce its absorption)
simvastatin or lovastatin over 40 mg daily (more statin side effects)
rosuvastatin (levels may rise — monitor)
digoxin (levels monitored)

Pregnancy: limited data — no drug-linked harm identified in case reports
