Thyroid hormone replacement for an underactive thyroid.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

Common side effects

  • difficulty sleeping
  • headaches
  • feeling anxious
  • sweating
  • hair loss

Cautions

  • most side effects mean the dose is too high
  • rare thyroid crisis — fever, racing heart, jaundice
  • may not suit overactive thyroid, diabetes, adrenal or heart conditions

Interactions

  • carbamazepine (epilepsy medicine)
  • omeprazole and antacids
  • calcium and iron supplements
  • beta-blockers and digoxin
  • sertraline; semaglutide; St John's wort; biotin (affects thyroid tests)

Pregnancy: can be taken in pregnancy — extra blood tests needed
