Thioridazine

An antipsychotic reserved for schizophrenia that has not responded to other antipsychotics.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • schizophrenia unresponsive to other antipsychotic drugs

Cautions

  • boxed warning: can dangerously disturb heart rhythm (sudden death reported)
  • last-line use only, after other antipsychotics fail
  • not for elderly people with dementia-related psychosis (higher death risk)
  • not with long QT syndrome or past heart rhythm problems

Interactions

  • fluoxetine, paroxetine (do not combine — raise its levels)
  • fluvoxamine (do not combine)
  • propranolol, pindolol (do not combine)
  • any other QT-prolonging medicine (do not combine)
