Tetracycline

A tetracycline antibiotic used for a wide range of bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • chest and urinary tract infections
  • skin and soft tissue infections
  • chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections
  • severe acne (add-on treatment)

Common side effects

  • loss of appetite
  • feeling sick
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • skin rashes

Cautions

  • can permanently stain teeth during tooth development
  • can make skin sensitive to sunlight
  • liver damage risk, especially with kidney disease
  • throat and food-pipe ulcers reported — avoid taking at bedtime

Interactions

  • penicillin (avoid combining — works against it)
  • blood thinners (dose may need lowering)
  • methoxyflurane anaesthetic (fatal kidney damage reported)
  • antacids and iron, zinc or calcium products (block absorption)
  • oral contraceptives (may work less well)
