Terbinafine

An antifungal medicine for fungal skin and nail infections such as athlete's foot.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • athlete's foot, ringworm and jock itch
  • fungal nail infections (tablets)
  • pityriasis versicolor and candidal skin infections

Common side effects

  • skin peeling or itching where applied
  • rash
  • headache
  • feeling or being sick
  • joint or muscle pain

Cautions

  • finish the full course or the infection may return
  • tablets can rarely affect the liver — report yellowing skin/eyes
  • do not give blood until 7 days after finishing tablets
  • tell your doctor about liver or kidney problems before tablets

Interactions

  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • rifampicin (antibiotic)
  • cimetidine (stomach medicine)
  • ciclosporin (after transplant)
  • tamoxifen (breast cancer medicine)
  • codeine and tramadol (painkillers — effects changed)

Pregnancy: tablets not generally recommended; creams unlikely to harm
