Common uses

HIV-1 treatment, combined with other antiretrovirals
chronic hepatitis B

Common side effects

rash
diarrhoea
nausea
headache
depression

Cautions

hepatitis B can flare badly after stopping (boxed warning)
kidney problems possible — monitoring needed
bone thinning possible
lactic acidosis — rare but serious

Interactions

didanosine (levels rise)
atazanavir (must be given with ritonavir)
some HIV or hepatitis C medicines raise tenofovir levels
other kidney-harming drugs
