Telmisartan + Hydrochlorothiazide

A combination of telmisartan (ARB) and hydrochlorothiazide (water tablet) to lower blood pressure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure (not as first treatment)

Common side effects

  • dizziness
  • upper respiratory tract infection
  • sinusitis
  • diarrhoea
  • fatigue

Cautions

  • boxed warning: can injure or kill a developing fetus
  • correct dehydration first — can cause low blood pressure
  • kidney function and potassium monitored
  • sudden eye pain or vision change needs urgent review

Interactions

  • lithium — toxicity risk
  • NSAID painkillers — kidney risk, weaker effect
  • aliskiren and other renin-angiotensin drugs (avoid combining)
  • diabetes medicines — dose may need adjusting
  • cholestyramine and colestipol (reduce absorption)

Pregnancy: avoid — stop as soon as pregnancy is detected
