inducing labour
strengthening contractions during labour

Common side effects

nausea and vomiting
high blood pressure episodes

Cautions

hospital use only, by intravenous drip with close supervision
overdose can cause violent contractions or uterine rupture
water intoxication with seizures reported on slow prolonged infusion
not used when normal delivery is unsafe (e.g. placenta praevia)

Interactions

vasoconstrictors with caudal block anaesthesia (severe hypertension)
cyclopropane anaesthesia (blood pressure and heart rhythm effects)

Pregnancy: used at delivery only, under hospital supervision
