Sunitinib

A targeted cancer capsule (kinase inhibitor) for kidney, gut and pancreatic tumours.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) after imatinib
  • advanced kidney cancer, and after kidney removal
  • pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours

Common side effects

  • tiredness and weakness
  • diarrhoea
  • mouth soreness (mucositis)
  • nausea and vomiting
  • hand-foot syndrome

Cautions

  • boxed warning: severe, sometimes fatal liver toxicity
  • heart problems and QT prolongation can occur
  • high blood pressure — monitor
  • can harm an unborn baby

Interactions

  • strong CYP3A4 inhibitors — dose reduction considered
  • strong CYP3A4 inducers — dose increase considered

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm the baby
