Sulphadiazine

A sulfonamide antibiotic for specific bacterial and parasitic infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

toxoplasmosis (with pyrimethamine)
some urinary tract infections
nocardiosis
chancroid and trachoma

Common side effects

nausea or vomiting
stomach pain
diarrhoea
headache
loss of appetite

Cautions

deaths from severe skin and blood reactions reported — stop at rash or
drink plenty of fluid to avoid crystals in the urine
not for babies under 2 months (with rare exceptions)

Interactions

warfarin and other blood thinners
methotrexate
sulfonylurea diabetes tablets
thiazide diuretics

Pregnancy: avoid at term — risk of kernicterus in the newborn
