Sulfonamide antibiotic eye drops for surface eye infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

conjunctivitis and other superficial eye infections
adjunct in trachoma treatment

Common side effects

local irritation, stinging and burning
eye redness
occasional secondary infection or allergy

Cautions

rare but fatal sulfonamide reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) reported
stop at first sign of rash or hypersensitivity
not with sulfonamide allergy
for the eye only

Interactions

silver-containing eye preparations (incompatible)

Pregnancy: only if benefit justifies risk
