Streptomycin

An injectable aminoglycoside antibiotic mainly used as part of tuberculosis treatment.

Clinical information

Common uses

tuberculosis (in combination regimens)
plague, tularaemia, brucellosis
certain other serious bacterial infections

Common side effects

dizziness and balance problems
nausea and vomiting
numbness or tingling of the face
rash
fever

Cautions

boxed warning: irreversible hearing and balance damage can occur
doses must be reduced with kidney problems
C. difficile diarrhoea can occur
cross-allergy with other aminoglycosides

Interactions

ethacrynic acid, furosemide, mannitol (diuretics) — worsen ear toxicity
other neurotoxic or kidney-toxic drugs, e.g. gentamicin, cyclosporine — avoid
anaesthetics and muscle relaxants — risk of breathing paralysis

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm the baby's hearing
