HIV-1 infection (in combination therapy)

Common side effects

headache
diarrhoea
nerve pain or numbness (neuropathy)
rash
nausea and vomiting

Cautions

boxed warning: lactic acidosis and severe liver problems, sometimes fatal
boxed warning: pancreatitis, especially combined with didanosine
peripheral neuropathy can be severe
body fat changes (lipoatrophy) may occur

Interactions

zidovudine — avoid combining
didanosine — raises pancreatitis and lactic acidosis risk
doxorubicin — use with caution
ribavirin — use with caution
hydroxyurea with didanosine — avoid

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed — serious risks reported with didanosine
