A medicine that removes excess potassium from the body to treat hyperkalaemia.

Clinical information

Common uses

high blood potassium (hyperkalaemia)

Common side effects

loss of appetite
feeling sick and vomiting
constipation
stomach irritation
occasional diarrhoea

Cautions

can drop potassium, calcium and magnesium too far
rare cases of intestinal necrosis
large doses can cause faecal impaction in elderly people
not for low potassium or bowel obstruction

Interactions

aluminium hydroxide antacids — bowel blockage reported

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
