Simvastatin

A statin used to treat high cholesterol and prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high cholesterol
  • preventing heart attack and stroke in cardiovascular disease
  • familial hypercholesterolaemia

Common side effects

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • feeling sick
  • digestive problems, e.g. constipation or diarrhoea
  • muscle aches

Cautions

  • report unexplained muscle pain — rare muscle damage
  • may not suit liver, kidney, or thyroid problems
  • avoid grapefruit juice
  • best not to drink too much alcohol

Interactions

  • antifungals, e.g. itraconazole, ketoconazole
  • antibiotics, e.g. fusidic acid, erythromycin, clarithromycin
  • HIV and hepatitis C medicines
  • ciclosporin (transplant medicine)
  • amlodipine, diltiazem, or verapamil
  • grapefruit juice — avoid

Pregnancy: not recommended — stop 3 months before trying to conceive
