Clinical information

Common uses

preventing and treating wound infection in second and third degree burns

Common side effects

temporary fall in white blood cells
burning sensation
rash or itching
skin discoloration

Cautions

not near the end of pregnancy, in premature babies, or newborns
sulfonamide-type allergic reactions can occur
risk of red-cell breakdown in G6PD deficiency

Interactions

cimetidine — higher risk of low white blood cells

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed — avoid near term
