Silodosin

An alpha-blocker capsule that relieves urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) symptoms

Common side effects

  • retrograde ejaculation
  • dizziness
  • diarrhoea
  • drop in blood pressure on standing
  • headache or stuffy nose

Cautions

  • not for severe kidney or liver impairment
  • can cause dizziness on standing, especially at first
  • tell your eye surgeon before cataract surgery
  • prostate cancer should be ruled out first

Interactions

  • strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) — contraindicated
  • other alpha-blockers — do not combine
  • ciclosporin and other strong P-gp inhibitors — not recommended
  • PDE5 inhibitors, e.g. sildenafil — low blood pressure risk
