Sevelamer

A phosphate binder that controls blood phosphorus in kidney disease patients on dialysis.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood phosphorus in chronic kidney disease on dialysis

Common side effects

  • vomiting
  • feeling sick
  • diarrhoea
  • indigestion
  • constipation or wind

Cautions

  • not for people with bowel obstruction
  • serious bowel problems (blockage, bleeding, perforation) reported
  • can lower fat-soluble vitamins and folic acid

Interactions

  • ciprofloxacin (antibiotic) — take 2 hours before or 6 after
  • mycophenolate mofetil — take 2 hours before sevelamer
  • levothyroxine, ciclosporin, tacrolimus — separate timing and monitor

Pregnancy: not absorbed into the body; vitamin supplements may be needed
