Sertraline

An SSRI antidepressant used for depression and anxiety-related conditions.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • depression
  • obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • panic disorder and social anxiety disorder
  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling or being sick
  • dizziness or drowsiness
  • problems sleeping
  • sexual problems

Cautions

  • do not stop suddenly — withdrawal symptoms possible
  • get urgent help for thoughts of self-harm
  • may not suit epilepsy, heart disease, or bleeding disorders
  • avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants, e.g. moclobemide, selegiline
  • warfarin, apixaban, and other anticoagulants
  • NSAIDs, e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen — bleeding risk
  • St John's wort — do not use
  • grapefruit juice — avoid

Pregnancy: can be used if needed — lowest effective dose
