Selegiline

An MAO-B inhibitor used alongside levodopa/carbidopa in Parkinson's disease.

Clinical information

Common uses

Parkinson's disease, as an add-on to levodopa/carbidopa

Common side effects

constipation
dizziness
involuntary movements (dyskinesia)
sleep problems
vomiting or rash

Cautions

can cause sudden sleep episodes during daily activities
can cause low blood pressure and hallucinations
do not stop abruptly — fever and confusion can occur
may raise blood pressure at doses above 2.5 mg/day

Interactions

opioids (meperidine, tramadol, methadone) — contraindicated, serotonin syndrome
other MAO inhibitors, incl. linezolid — contraindicated, hypertensive crisis
dextromethorphan (cough medicine) — contraindicated
St John's wort and cyclobenzaprine — contraindicated
antidepressants — serotonin syndrome risk
