Secnidazole

A single-dose oral antibiotic used for bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • bacterial vaginosis (age 12 and older)
  • trichomoniasis (age 12 and older)

Common side effects

  • vaginal thrush
  • headache
  • feeling sick or vomiting
  • altered taste
  • diarrhoea or stomach pain

Cautions

  • not for people with Cockayne syndrome — liver failure risk
  • vaginal thrush may develop and need antifungal treatment
  • avoid repeated use — cancer risk seen in rodent studies
