Secnidazole

A single-dose oral antibiotic used for bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis.

Clinical information

Common uses

bacterial vaginosis (age 12 and older)
trichomoniasis (age 12 and older)

Common side effects

vaginal thrush
headache
feeling sick or vomiting
altered taste
diarrhoea or stomach pain

Cautions

not for people with Cockayne syndrome — liver failure risk
vaginal thrush may develop and need antifungal treatment
avoid repeated use — cancer risk seen in rodent studies
