Salmon Calcitonin

A hormone injection used for Paget's disease of bone, high blood calcium, and osteoporosis.

Clinical information

Common uses

symptomatic Paget's disease of bone
high blood calcium (hypercalcaemia)
postmenopausal osteoporosis when other treatments unsuitable

Common side effects

feeling sick, with or without vomiting
inflammation at the injection site
flushing of the face or hands

Cautions

serious allergic reactions, including fatal anaphylaxis, reported
can lower blood calcium — ensure enough calcium and vitamin D
possible small increase in cancer risk — reassess need periodically

Interactions

lithium — levels may fall; dose may need adjusting

Pregnancy: no human studies — talk to your doctor
