Salmon Calcitonin

A hormone injection used for Paget's disease of bone, high blood calcium, and osteoporosis.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • symptomatic Paget's disease of bone
  • high blood calcium (hypercalcaemia)
  • postmenopausal osteoporosis when other treatments unsuitable

Common side effects

  • feeling sick, with or without vomiting
  • inflammation at the injection site
  • flushing of the face or hands

Cautions

  • serious allergic reactions, including fatal anaphylaxis, reported
  • can lower blood calcium — ensure enough calcium and vitamin D
  • possible small increase in cancer risk — reassess need periodically

Interactions

  • lithium — levels may fall; dose may need adjusting
