Salcatonin

Injected hormone for Paget's disease, high calcium and osteoporosis.

Clinical information

Common uses

symptomatic Paget's disease when alternatives unsuitable
high blood calcium (hypercalcaemia)
postmenopausal osteoporosis when alternatives unsuitable

Common side effects

nausea with or without vomiting
injection-site inflammation
flushing of the face or hands

Cautions

serious allergic reactions, including fatal anaphylaxis, reported
possible increased overall cancer risk with long-term use
calcium can drop — ensure calcium and vitamin D intake
antibodies can develop and stop it working

Interactions

lithium (levels may fall — dose may need adjusting)

Pregnancy: no human studies — animal data show lower birth weights
