Salbutamol

A reliever inhaler that quickly eases breathing in asthma and COPD.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • relieving asthma symptoms
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • preventing breathlessness before exercise or triggers

Common side effects

  • feeling shaky
  • faster heartbeat for a short time
  • headaches

Cautions

  • needing it over 4 times a day means poor control — see your doctor
  • check first if you have heart problems, overactive thyroid, low potassium, or diabetes
  • in an asthma attack take up to 10 puffs; call 999 if no better

Interactions

  • beta blockers, e.g. bisoprolol — can oppose salbutamol
  • diuretics, e.g. furosemide — low potassium risk
  • steroids, e.g. prednisolone — low potassium risk
  • theophylline or aminophylline — low potassium risk
  • some antidepressant medicines
