Sacubitril + Valsartan

A combination heart failure medicine that lowers the risk of death and hospitalisation.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • chronic heart failure in adults
  • symptomatic heart failure in children 1 year and older

Common side effects

  • low blood pressure
  • high potassium
  • cough
  • dizziness
  • kidney problems

Cautions

  • must not be used in pregnancy — can injure the baby (boxed warning)
  • angioedema (severe swelling) can occur
  • never used with ACE inhibitors
  • kidney function and potassium need monitoring

Interactions

  • ACE inhibitors — contraindicated; wait 36 hours when switching
  • aliskiren in diabetes — contraindicated
  • potassium-sparing diuretics — raise potassium
  • NSAID painkillers — kidney risk
  • lithium — toxicity risk

Pregnancy: must not be used — can injure or kill the developing baby
