Ropivacaine Hydrochloride

A local anaesthetic injection used for surgery and acute pain relief.

Clinical information

Common uses

local or regional anaesthesia for surgery, including caesarean section
epidural pain relief after surgery or in labour
nerve blocks and local infiltration

Common side effects

low blood pressure
feeling sick and vomiting
slow heartbeat
headache
back pain

Cautions

given only by trained clinicians with resuscitation equipment ready
accidental injection into a vein can cause cardiac arrest
not for spinal or intravenous regional anaesthesia
lower doses for elderly or debilitated patients

Interactions

other amide local anaesthetics — additive toxicity
fluvoxamine and other strong CYP1A2 inhibitors — raise levels
drugs linked to methemoglobinemia, e.g. nitrates, dapsone
amiodarone-type heart rhythm drugs — caution

Pregnancy: used in childbirth anaesthesia under specialist supervision
