Rocuronium Bromide

A muscle relaxant given during general anaesthesia for intubation and surgery.

Clinical information

Common uses

muscle relaxation during surgery or ventilation
helping insert a breathing tube under anaesthesia

Common side effects

temporary low or high blood pressure
fast heartbeat
feeling sick or vomiting

Cautions

hospital use only, by trained anaesthesia staff
severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) have occurred
causes paralysis — breathing support must be available
residual muscle weakness possible afterwards, especially in older people

Interactions

some antibiotics, e.g. aminoglycosides, vancomycin — prolong effect
inhaled anaesthetics — enhance and prolong effect
magnesium, lithium, local anaesthetics — prolong effect
carbamazepine or phenytoin (epilepsy medicines) — may shorten effect
quinidine — paralysis may return
