Rizatriptan Benzoate

A triptan medicine used to treat migraine attacks.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • acute migraine with or without aura
  • adults and children aged 6 to 17

Common side effects

  • tiredness or weakness
  • sleepiness
  • pain or pressure sensations
  • dizziness
  • feeling sick

Cautions

  • not for heart disease, past stroke, or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • not for migraine prevention or cluster headache
  • overuse can cause medication-overuse headache
  • serotonin syndrome possible — stop if it occurs

Interactions

  • another triptan or ergot medicine within 24 hours — contraindicated
  • MAO-A inhibitor antidepressants within 2 weeks — contraindicated
  • propranolol — must not be combined
