Rivaroxaban

An anticoagulant (blood thinner) used to prevent and treat blood clots.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  • preventing strokes in atrial fibrillation
  • clot prevention after hip or knee replacement
  • coronary heart disease and peripheral arterial disease

Common side effects

  • bleeding more easily than usual
  • nosebleeds and bleeding gums
  • bruising more easily
  • anaemia (tiredness, paler skin)
  • stomach pain or indigestion

Cautions

  • do not stop suddenly — this can be dangerous
  • heavy or internal bleeding is a serious risk — carry alert card
  • may not suit liver disease or stomach ulcers
  • use contraception if you could get pregnant

Interactions

  • other anticoagulants, e.g. warfarin
  • some antifungal medicines
  • NSAID painkillers
  • SSRI antidepressants
  • some epilepsy medicines and antibiotics
  • St John's wort

Pregnancy: not used in pregnancy — may not be safe for the baby
